In witchcraft, a poppet, sometimes known as a Moppet, Mommet or Pippy is a doll made to represent a person, for casting spells on that person, or aid them through magic. These dolls are fashioned from simple natural materials and stuffed with items of magical significance with the intent that actions performed upon the subject will be transferred to the effigy based on sympathetic magic. In rarer cases the sympathy may be reversed so that actions performed on the effigy will be transferred to the subject.

Making a poppet

Making a poppet is a three step process:

1. First the basic doll is made
2. Next the doll must be filled with items appropriate to the desired magic effect
3. Finally the sympathetic link between the poppet and a living being must be created by filling it with a taglock

Collecting taglocks

Taglocks are items that represent the individual on which magic is to be performed. They typically take the form of a lock of hair, fingernail clippings or a drop of blood. Taglocks are collected with a taglock kit, either directly by using it on the individual, or by using it on a bed on which that person has slept.

Binding a poppet to a player or creature

In the following example we have an unbound Earth Protection Poppet, in order to bind this to a player (or creature) we must have a used taglock Kit, then simply craft the two together as shown.

A Vampiric Poppet requires two Taglock Kits, one bound to the victim, the other the beneficiary. Place both Taglock Kits and the Poppet in the crafting table at the same time, with the beneficiaries' kit first and the victim's second. The tooltip for the resulting bound poppet should indicate the direction damage will flow.

Protection Poppets

The majority of poppets are protection poppets, that is they take an effect instead of the bound player. For this to occur, the poppet must either be held in the players inventory, or located on a special Poppet Shelf.
